Management of the Memorial Hall
The Memorial Hall is a registered charity (No 304484) and is run by a very active Management Committee, which includes representatives from village user bodies. The Management Committee organises fund raising events throughout the year to cater for a wide variety of tastes and also runs the 200 Club draw. The fund raising events include jumble sales, Village Day, race nights, themed evenings, suppers, firework displays, dances and many more.
The Management Committee is also responsible for deciding how the income generated shall be spent – whether on maintenance, new projects or for other uses.
History
The Village Hall was created out of money raised by the people of Beckington, following the world wars, as a Memorial to those local people who lost their lives for the country.
Over the years the Hall has been extended and improved. It now includes a large, well equipped kitchen, sports changing facilities and the self contained Clifford Suite, which is suitable for smaller functions and meetings independent of the Main Hall. There is storage for sports equipment, a tool store shed and a storage facility for larger equipment. Major works have taken place since 1988. The Clifford Suite was built between 1989 and 1992, without grant aid, as and when we could afford it, paid for by our own fund raising efforts. By 1995 the original corrugated asbestos cement roof of the hall was deteriorating and the 1981 flat roof extension was leaking. A project to re-roof the complete area was undertaken whilst extending the front entrance to accommodate a bigger kitchen, new toilets and cloakroom. The old metal windows on the Bath Road elevation were replaced, and a new fire exit door installed. The original pre-cast concrete pillars were unable to take the weight of a conventional tiled roof, so lightweight coated steel "tiles" were used, much to the surprise of most people when they saw it. Numerous improvements in recent years include:
- Converting the old committee room into a bar-room.
- Re-decoration of the interior and installation of bench seating outside the Hall.
- Replacement of the high sports fence.
- Fitting new carpet and curtains in the main hall.
- Installing new wooden fencing around the car park.
- Lifting and relaying the paved area around the Hall and laying a new paved area in front of the Clifford Suite.
- Installing a seat, looking out to the cricket pitch, in memory of Brian Keevil.
- Installing new stage curtains.
- Installing a complete new gas convector heating system.
- Installing outside safety and security lighting and new lighting in the Main Hall.
- Installing a new fenced playground area with safety tiling and bench seats.
- Removal of old, dilapidated wooden storage sheds and building a new storeroom as an extension to the Clifford Suite facility.
- Installing a dishwasher in the kitchen and a glasses cleaner in the bar.
