BECKINGTON DAY CENTRE
The aim of the Day Centre is to bring together lonely, elderly people, for companionship. Meetings are held in Lahs Place Community Hall every Monday. Elderly people come from Beckington, Rode and Frome. Their age range is 73 to 91.
There are 13 helpers, including drivers.
Members pay a small amount each week to cover the cost of morning coffee, hot lunch and an afternoon cup of tea and a biscuit. The Centre receives a grant from Social Services. Volunteers driving private cars provide transport who are paid a mileage rate.
Activities are arranged for members and these include handicrafts, card games, bingo, two coffee mornings a year, Holy Communion once a month, outside speakers and visitors, talks, visits by school children, the occasional outing, quizzes and Christmas entertainment.
LAHS PLACE
Lahs Place provides accommodation of a "sheltered" nature, under the care of a residential Sheltered Housing Officer. At present there are 30 residents, the eldest resident being 86 years old. There are 21 units of accommodation; six bedsit bungalows and fifteen two bedroomed bungalows. In addition, there is a communal room where residents can enjoy social events. Residents are drawn mainly from the Beckington area and are either registered disabled or of retirement age.
The only member of staff is the Sheltered Housing Officer who lives on site. All of the residents lead an independent lifestyle, sometimes with the help of carers for personal and domestic assistance. The residents are involved in village life through membership of the Over-60's in many cases, attending events at the village hall and in other ways that are in common with all villagers. Occasionally the residents of Lahs Place hold social events in their hall to which the villagers are invited.
